Huddled near the warmth of the fire in the common room of the Ebon Tankard, Graech sipped at his second warm mug of thick mead. A hazy film of smoke floated around the heads of those few patrons who remained in the establishment even after the bells that signalled the enforced curfew had long since tolled. Eventually, or so Graech had been told, Protectorate soldiers would arrive and usher those who lingered off to bed. And any who might complain would see the butt end of a spear or the heavy hilt of one of their swords.

The penalty had been worse immediately after the invasion. It was then that Graech had learned that the enemy had routinely rounded up those they thought might cause trouble. Looking about the murky room once again, the old Drayen was saddened by the missing faces in the Tankard. Faren the tanner and his son Baern had been taken the first night; Sheb the innkeeper by the end of the third. Colt and Erian, two blacksmithing brothers whom Graech had enjoyed many a pint with over the years had simply disappeared. And those are only a few of the lost.
